HP has unveiled its HP Z Backpack VR solution at SIGGRAPH 2017. The Backpack looks to provide the user with freedom of movement while in virtual experiences.

The company describes the backpack as a ‘catalyst for more powerful VR experiences across many enterprises and businesses’.

The company specifically pointed out four potential use cases for the technology:

– the deliverance of safe and effective virtual training for dangerous professions or operating environments, such as medical procedures or those involving heavy or large equipment

– virtual walkthroughs of simulated architectural environments, such as client reviews of building projects

– product development and R&D, where product concepts can be reviewed and agreed upon

– commercial entertainment VR experiences

The backpack is HP’s opening salvo in the battle to crack the VR tethering problem. The backpack is light with an ergonomic design and swappable batteries that allow the user to move completely unrestricted around an immersive experience.

A Intel Core i7 vPro processor gives the pack its processing power, while a NVIDIA Quadro P5200 provides a whopping 16GB video memory.

The docking solution is designed to allow creators to toggle between desktop for design and wearable VR for review and testing.
