Australian company Thred Ltd will be trailing its flagship AR app, Sweep, at the University of Sydney and UNSW.
The company is one of the first to create a successful combination of location-based messaging and AR experiences. The Sweep app is a geo-locked chat app that allows users in the same area to chat to each other, such as asking people in a bar for drink recommendations or asking to be notified when happy hour is ending.
Users will then be able to access exclusive, location based AR content. The aim is to help small businesses leverage AR quickly and easily and begin offering innovative experiences to their prospective customer.
The trail will be looking to see how awareness and familiarity with AR, and test specific use cases around the delivery of AR content.
The trail release will take place during the university’s orientation weeks (O-weeks).
The app has already had a limited release, and has been seeing relative success. So far, over 1,400 users have participated in location-based chats, and the 71% of those who have downloaded the app have gone on to become active users.
Geoff Marshall, managing director, said:
"Due to the rigorous work of the team over the preceding weeks, we have accelerated our technology development on numerous augmented reality features, several weeks ahead of schedule.
"This has created the opportunity to bring forward the feature release of our augmented reality functionality for Sweep.
“The O-week program trials provide an opportunity to get first-hand feedback from real users, which in turn will fast-track the platform development, our Sweep app program and the Agent Reality execution program.”
